Discover how AI and automation are revolutionizing the U.S. economy, empowering solopreneurs and driving the growth of one-person companies.

The Rise of the One-Person Company

A significant economic shift is underway in the U.S., where individual entrepreneurs, known as ‘solopreneurs,’ are becoming powerful economic forces. This trend, largely fueled by advancements in AI and automation, challenges the traditional view of a company as a large organization with many employees.

Futurist Thomas Frey highlights that there are nearly 30 million solopreneurs in the U.S., generating $1.7 trillion in revenue. This represents about 6.8% of the total economic output.

  • 56% of these businesses launched since 2020.
  • 77% achieved profitability in their first year.
  • Solopreneur-led companies constituted 30% of all startups in 2024, up from 23.7% in 2019.

Key Drivers: AI, Vibe Coding, and Capital

Three main forces are propelling this solopreneur wave:

  • AI as the Cheapest Employee: AI tools handle tasks like customer service, marketing, and coding for a fraction of the cost. 74% of solopreneurs now use AI, freeing up significant daily work time.
  • “Vibe Coding” Eliminates Technical Barriers: No-code and low-code platforms, often AI-enhanced, allow individuals to build custom software without extensive coding. 84% of developers use AI coding tools.
  • Growing Confidence and Capital: A high 94% of solopreneurs project business growth by 2026. Investors are increasingly backing solo-led ventures, which captured 14.7% of priced equity venture rounds in 2024. AI availability also makes 47% of respondents more likely to start a business.

Reshaping Industries and Future Outlook

The solopreneur wave is reshaping industries such as content and media, software and SaaS, professional services, consulting, and e-commerce. Rural areas are seeing solopreneur growth at 2.5 times the rate of urban centers, underscoring the location-independent nature of these businesses.

For aspiring solopreneurs, Frey advises starting with a tight niche and building an AI tool stack before the product. Automating processes early, prioritizing volume over perfection, and protecting personal time are also crucial. Planning for contractors as the first “hire” is recommended.

While large corporations will persist, the default unit of business for a vast part of the economy is transitioning from a “team” to an “individual plus AI.”
