India Pharma Exports Face US Tariff Threat; Cement Margins to Fall

By ThePip DeskIndia Pharma Exports Face US Tariff Threat; Cement Margins to Fall

US tariff threats loom over India’s pharma exports, potentially impacting pricing. Meanwhile, Indian cement makers foresee declining margins in FY27 due to rising input costs.

India’s pharmaceutical exports could face significant disruption from proposed steep US tariffs on generic medicines, a development highlighted by the Global Trade Research Initiative. This potential impact on India’s largest pharma export market could vary across different product categories.

US Tariff Threat to Indian Generics

The Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) recently warned that proposed tariffs from the United States could significantly affect India’s leading pharmaceutical export sector. While the overall impact is substantial, its precise effect is expected to differ based on specific product categories.

Indian generic medicines are typically priced seven to ten times lower than their branded counterparts. This substantial price difference is a key factor in their market position.

Even with a 100 per cent tariff, many Indian generics are projected to remain more affordable than branded options. Consumers are anticipated to absorb a significant portion of any additional costs incurred due to these tariffs.

Cement Sector Faces Margin Squeeze

Concurrently, Crisil Ratings forecasts a reduction in the operating margins for Indian cement manufacturers during fiscal 2027. This decline is primarily driven by persistent elevated input costs, exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

Operating margin is expected to decrease by ₹50-75 per tonne in fiscal 2027. Margins are projected to settle at ₹925-950 per tonne for FY27, marking a drop from approximately ₹1,000 per tonne recorded in fiscal 2026.

Despite these margin pressures, the rating agency noted that capital expenditure will remain high due to ongoing capacity additions aimed at meeting growing demand. Strong domestic demand is set to boost operating cash flows, which, alongside robust balance sheets, will help maintain stable credit profiles across the industry.

These dual economic pressures highlight the complex interplay of global trade policies and geopolitical events on India’s key industrial sectors.
