India and Canada are targeting the conclusion of a free trade agreement by the end of 2026. This significant move follows discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart, Mark Carney, held during the G7 Summit.
Key Agreement Details
- Both nations committed to concluding negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
- The leaders met on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian-les-Bains, eastern France.
- Discussions focused on enhancing cooperation across defence, trade, and energy sectors.
Deepening Strategic Ties
Beyond trade, the two leaders also agreed to initiate negotiations on a General Security of Information Agreement. This aims to further deepen defence and security cooperation between India and Canada.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed the outcomes, highlighting the shared commitment to strengthening bilateral relations.
