Bank credit grew 17.94% Y-o-Y to reach ₹232.54 lakh crore as of October 15, 2026, according to the latest Reserve Bank of India data. During the same period, bank deposits reached ₹284.37 lakh crore, rising from ₹243.88 lakh crore recorded by October 17, 2025.

The Reserve Bank of India reported that bank credit expanded from ₹197.17 lakh crore on October 17, 2025, to the current level. Deposits also saw a year-on-year growth of 16.60 per cent. The central bank attributed the higher credit growth to excess liquidity within the banking system during early October and increased borrowing demand throughout the festive season in India.

Surplus liquidity in the banking system ranged between ₹2 lakh crore and ₹4.5 lakh crore from October 1 to October 15. This liquidity followed large FCNR (B) deposits collected by banks through a concessional window provided by the regulator. System liquidity increased during August and September following measures taken to encourage capital inflows. Since the last Monetary Policy Committee meeting in August 2026, the net position under the Liquidity Adjustment Facility showed an average daily surplus of ₹5.9 lakh crore.
